A solid oak side chair draws on the rustic vernacular and Arts and Crafts influences, reinterpreted with a bold, slightly brutalist sensibility.
The backrest is cut from a single thick board with a gently undulating, scalloped outline. It is fixed to flat plank uprights with plugged fixings that remain visible as darker roundels across the face. The seat is formed from two substantial oak boards with softened edges and a matching wavy front profile, separated by a narrow gap in the manner of traditional plank seating.
The most distinctive feature is the leg construction. Each leg is built from two shaped boards set at right angles, producing a cruciform section that swells and tapers in a waisted, almost figurative curve before flaring slightly at the foot. Shaped aprons with arched lower edges brace the frame beneath the seat. The rear uprights continue down to form the back legs in one flowing line.
Saw marks remain visible along the edges of the uprights and legs, a deliberate textural contrast to the smoother seat and back. The oak shows good figure, with ray fleck on the quarter-sawn sections and lively grain across the seat boards. The finish has mellowed to a warm mid-to-dark brown with honest wear consistent with age and use, including minor edge wear and surface marks. A well-made and individual piece with considerable presence.

"Something I haven't mentioned: Over the last few months, the number of UNdamaged deliveries I have received can be counted on a single hand. Absolutely not kidding. The packaging, shipping, and handling industry is a complete disaster. Thankfully, this gorgeous antique side table from @littconcepthouse.com is one of those special few." |
