The Ortíz Cortés family, based in the Mixteca Alta region of Oaxaca, has been keeping their ancient ceramic tradition alive for centuries in the community of Tonaltepec. These pottery pieces are notable for being decorated with organic plant pigments, with the dark brown color achieved through the use of an ink made from prickly pear and oak bark. It is important to treat these clay pieces with care, as they are living objects that will grow old with you. To maintain their beauty, it is recommended to hand wash them in warm water and avoid using them in the dishwasher or microwave. It is also important not to leave a cup full of water for more than three days, as it may cause the clay to soften and potentially break.
