Spanish Colonial painted four panel embossed leather screen. The leather embossing is done and then delicately painted giving it a 3 dimensional look. Some slight cracks in the original leather. Each panel is hand nailed to the frame with the original nails.
This technique of European embossed and painted leather is also know as Cuir de Cordoue. The technique originated in North Africa and was brought over to Spain, then the rest of the Continent over 1,000 years ago. Patterns for Cuir de Cordoue followed fashions in tapestries of the time , and the colorful leather was used commonly as wall hangings.
