Early 19th century monk's bench with hinged round table top. Lifts to expose a carved arm chair. Original brown painted finish.
A monks bench, or hutch table, was a very useful piece of furniture in the 19th century. Since homes and rooms were smaller and used for multiple functions, the flip top would allow for the dining table to swing up out of the way and allow somebody to sit.
I don't know if they were ever really used by monks, but the name is cool nonetheless.
